Hand Rejuvenation
The face, neck and hands are the most visible parts of the body. More than any other part of your body, your hands are subjected on a daily basis to the wind, sun, work, water (especially hot water) and harsh chemicals, which strips the skin of natural oils.
What causes aging hands?
Chronic sun exposure (photoaging) creates wrinkles and discolorations and deteriorates the supporting structures of the skin called collagen and elastin. Aging leads to a loss of subcutaneous fat which causes lost volume in the hands and makes the underlying tendons, bulging veins, and bony prominences more prominent. May people seek hand rejuvenation when they realize their aging hands are a telltale sign of their age.
What is hand rejuvenation?
Hand rejuvenation is accomplished with a combination of nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures to address each element of aging hands: volume loss, sun damage, pigmentation and texture issues, and protruding veins and tendons.
What is Hand augmentation?
It is the use of dermal fillers and fat grating to restore volume lost due to aging. Augmentation also improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles for a smoother, natural look. Hand augmentation significantly improves the appearance of aging hands.
Dermal fillers
Soft tissue dermal fillers can be injected into the backs of the hands to restore volume to plumps the hands, decreases skin wrinkling, reduces the appearance of veins, bones and tendons. Results are immediate. Side effects are mild and temporary. Several dermal fillers used for volume restoration include:
- The hyaluronic acid filler Restylane® LYFT™ was the first FDA approved dermal filler for hand rejuvenation. Effects last from 6 months to a year.
- Radiesse® is a collagen stimulator made of calcium hydroxyapatite which is FDA approved for hand augmentation. It provides immediate fullness and continues to work to stimulate the body’s production of new collagen to restore volume. It lasts from 12-18 months.
- Juvederm® is another hyaluronic acid filler for the hands. Improvement is instant and lasts about six months to a year.
How to treat sun damage, pigment and texture changes?
Photorejuvenation
Photorejuvenation with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), also called a photofacial, is successful to improve the texture and tone of the hand skin. IPL treatments reduce sun damage and pigmentation changes including brown and red spots, liver spots, broken capillaries, and wrinkles without damaging the surface of the skin. Treatments also improve texture. There is little to no downtime and results are long-lasting. Several treatments are recommended to achieve desired results.
Chemical peels
Chemical peels contain acids that are gentle and effective to remove rough, dry, dull skin and discolorations age spots and uneven texture for a softer, more youthful look. They are a quick, painless solution to rejuvenate the hands.
